Green Corridor helps transport heart 20 km

After a dry spell of 47 years, Mumbai recorded its first successful heart transplant!

The ambulance transporting the cadaver heart reached Fortis hospital in Mulund from Kalina airport, a distance of around 20 kms, in just 18 minutes, thanks to systematic co-ordination between hospitals and Mumbai police.

This was the second attempt at a heart transplant; in 1968, an unsuccessful attempt was made for the same.

The heart, harvested from a Pune woman who was declared brain dead, was airlifted and brought to Fortis Hospital in Mulund to be implanted into a 22-year old man suffering from a heart ailment.

To ensure it to be a speedy process, green corridors were created both in Pune and Mumbai so the heart could travel to Pune and Mumbai airports respectively.

The heart which would have otherwise taken four hours, took just about an hour. In Pune, the commute to the airport which was 11 kms away took just even minutes. While in Mumbai the green corridor created by the traffic police through a convoy of 12 vehicles made sure the transport took no more than eighteen minutes to reach Fortis hospital from Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport. Further a navy plane was used to fly the cadaver from Pune to Mumbai.

The heart left Pune's Jehangir Hospital at 2.38pm and at 4pm, doctors at Mulund's Fortis Hospital had started the transplant operation.
