DU one-time admission appeal hearing commence August 16

The top court today set August 16 to hear the appeal filed against a High Court decision that upheld one-time admission test policy of Dhaka University.

A four-member bench of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha set the date.

Guardians of 26 admission seekers have recently filed the petition also seeking the apex court’s order to allow the students, who passed higher secondary (HSC) exams last year, to sit for the DU admission test twice.

Subrata Chowdhury, petitioners counsel, told The Daily Star that their clients submitted the petition saying that the DU authorities have not issued any prior notice to the admission seekers before taking the decision.

Following the new policy set by Dhaka University, those students who passed the HSC in 2014 have become deprived of sitting for the admission test this year.

The High Court on July 8 upheld the Dhaka University's decision that barred the admission seekers from sitting for the admission test more than once.

The DU authorities took the decision on October 15 last year prohibiting the admission seekers to reappear in the admission test which is a violation of the fundamental principle of equal opportunity for education.

Articles 15, 17 and 19 of the constitution have ensured equal education opportunity for all, according to the petition.
