What your vaginal discharge says about your health

Every woman should know that vaginal discharge is not a disease but a normal function of the body. In fact, it keeps the vagina clean and prevent infections. However, the colour of the vaginal discharge is significant as it may be a symptom of an underlying medical condition.

We spoke to Dr. Ragini Agrawal, Director, Medical Services, W Hospital, Gurgaon to know more.

The right colour: The vaginal discharge is normally transparent and odourless. Its colour may vary from totally clear to slight white, depending on the stage in the menstruation period.

The right amount: If the colour, smell or consistency of the vaginal discharge is significantly unusual, there is a sensation of vaginal itching or burning, or a change of panties or partyliner is required frequently, then one needs to see the doctor.

Greenish, frothy or yellow discharge can be caused by a STD called trichomoniasis.

Thick, white and cheesy discharge means an yeast infection.

White, gray or yellow colour may signify a common type of infection called bacterial vaginosis, caused by the overgrowth of bacteria in the vagina.

Pink or bloody discharge could be caused due to the shedding of the uterus lining (lochia).

Yellow colour may indicate gonorrhea, another type of STD.

A bloody or brown discharge may be a sign of irregular menstrual cycles, or, less commonly, of endometrial cancer.

Smelly discharge indicates an infection, STD or some other problem. A fishy odour usually signifies bacterial vaginosis. The STD called trichomoniasis can cause a bad smell too. The smell of vaginal discharge may also be different during pregnancy or in cases of bad personal hygiene.

Vaginal hygiene tips:
Wear clean, dry and breathable underwear.
Shower daily to maintain good personal hygiene.
Keep the area dry, as moisture causes fungus to grow, leading to vaginal itching and smell.
Ensure that your body gets good nutrition to maintain a good pH balance.
Don't do vaginal douching as it upsets the natural balance of bacteria in the vagina. The vaginal discharge is normally quite acidic, enabling good bacteria and natural antibiotics to keep harmful bacteria at bay. Altering this natural balance can cause inflammation or infection.
Use condom during sex to prevent cross infection.
