Mannas' bail petition dismiss

Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrates Court on Thursday rejected the bail petition for Nagorik Oikya convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna in a sedition case filed with Gulshan Police Station.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Bikas Kumar Saha passed the order after the hearing when Manna’s lawyer Advocate Abdul Mannan Khan sought bail for him citing his ‘bad health condition’.

Manna was taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital on Tuesday around 11:00pm after he felt chest pain.

He has been in police custody since March 7 on sedition charges in the second phase.

The case was filed by Gulshan Police Station sub-inspector Sohel Rana on March 5.

Manna was accused of making provocative statements to instigate the army to topple the government during phone conversations with BNP leader Sadeque Hossain Khoka and an unidentified man.

On February 25, the Nagorik Oikko convener was put on a 10-day remand in another case filed with Gulshan Police Station.

The case was also filed by SI Sohel Rana on February 24.

In the case, Manna was charged with issuing provocative statements to instigate the armed forces to overthrow the government while talking to an unidentified man on Viber, an instant messaging and Voice over IP (VoIP) app for smartphones.
