Writ seeks hang about on pamphlet of bar council elections result

A writ petition was filed with the High Court today seeking a stay on the publication of the result of the Bangladesh Bar Council elections.

Eunus Ali Akond, a Supreme Court lawyer who contested the election but failed to win, submitted the petition to the HC also seeking a rule upon the bar council chairman to explain why he should not be directed to count the ballot papers of the poll.

In the petition, he said the bar council chairman had to count all the ballot papers received from various polling centers after the August 26 elections as per rule 15 (2) bar council law.

But Attorney General Mahbubey Alam, also chairman of the bar council, declared the election result on September 3 on the basis of tabulation received from the presiding officer of the polling centers without following the bar council rules.

The HC may hold hearing on the petition later in the day, Eunus told The Daily Star.

According to the official result, the ruling Awami League backed lawyer panel Sammilito Ainjibi Samannoy Parishad Parishad won 11 posts of executive members in the election while pro-BNP lawyer forum Jatiyatabadi Oikya Panel got three posts.
