PM will receive  Champions of the Earth Award

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina won the ‘Champions of the Earth’ award of United Nations.

The award will be handed over to Sheikh Hasina during the general session of United Nations at New York, reports Prothom Alo.

Ehsanul Karim, prime minister’s press secretary, told the Bangla daily today.

Sheikh Hasina has been recognised by United Nations for her outstanding contribution towards environmental preservation, added Ehsanul Karim.

The Champions of the Earth Award is the United Nations highest environmental honour that recognises outstanding visionaries and leaders in the fields of policy, science, entrepreneurship, and civil society action.

The award, which is organised by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), seeks to distinguish men and women whose actions and leadership have made a positive impact on the environment.

The year 2015 is the time for global action to adopt a new sustainable development agenda and to reach a global agreement on climate change.

The award seeks to build on these two critical agenda by highlighting people and organisations all over the world that exemplify leadership and advocate action on sustainable development and climate change.

Past winners include Sylvia Earle, Mario Molina, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Tommy Remengesau, Jr., Felipe Calderon, Tsakhia Elbergdoj, Al Gore, Mikhail Gorbachev, Marina Silva, and many other such exemplary leaders.
