Two suspects have been held in connection with the murder of former tax commissioner Abu Taher during a robbery in Rampura.

Police arrested the victim’s former car driver Md Nasir, 29, and accomplice Md Rasel Talukder, 22, said Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Joint Commissioner Monirul Islam on Monday.

“Nasir drove Taher’s car for nine months but was recently fired after he refused to drive during shutdowns and blockades, he said. He demanded his dues in cash after he was handed a cheque.”

Police said he masterminded the early-morning robbery in Rampura’s TV Gate area on Mar 2 ‘as revenge’.

At least eight robbers tied up those in Taher’s residence and took 12 Bhori worth of gold jewellery, Tk 45,000, and three mobile phones.

Taher, his wife and two domestic workers were tied up by the robbers.

“They gagged Abu Taher and severed his veins. We questioned Nasir and his accomplice Rasel to get an idea of what had happened.”
