In 7 months 71 killed on 22km Sirajganj road accident

A total of 71 people were killed and 133 injured in separate 34 road accidents on 22-kilometre stretch of Bangabandhu Bridge western approach road in just past seven months.

Sirajganj district police superintendent office sources said this.
On 21 July, five passengers were killed as a CNG-run auto-rickshaw crashed into a bus at Mulibari level-crossing on the western side of Bangabandhu Bridge in Sirajganj sadar upazila.
On 19 July, 17 people died in a head-on collision between two buses on the road stretch.
According to the local police administration, 428 people were killed in the past 17 years and thousands injured.
Bangabandhu Bridge Authorities, Sirajganj Roads and Highways Department, and local police administration have identified some causes of the accidents. Two-lane narrow road, existence of no bylane, vehicles driven by unskilled drivers, excessive speed, overtaking, and increase of battery-run vehicles on the approach road acted behind the frequent accidents in the area.
Sirajganj Swartho Rakkha Committee convenor Zahurul Haque told Prothom Alo that the local people have been demanding a four-lane road, and expansion of the existing two-lane approach road.
“If they are not constructed soon, accidents will increase in future as the number of vehicles have increased,” Zahurul Haque added.
