SC: Disrespect rule against Janakantha editor and journalists

The apex court today issued a contempt rule against the editor and a journalist of daily Janakantha over a report published on Salauddin Quader Chowdhury.

A 4-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha issued the suo motu (on its own) rule after the verdict of SQ Chowdhury.

The court ordered them to appear before it on August 3 and explain why contempt of court proceedings should not be brought against them for publishing an article on July 16.

Janakantha journalist Sadesh Roy and the daily’s editor and publisher Atiqullah Khan Masud will have to appear before the court by 9:00am on that day and offer their explanations.

Later, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam told reporters at a press briefing that the report questioned the image and magistracy of the judiciary and created disappointment among the people.
