Unusual rain in August

As the country experienced 65 percent more rain than normal in July, Met Office forecasted that August is also likely to witness more rainfall than usual

"Less rainfall weather is prevailing in the country and this trend is likely to continue in the next three or four days. Heavy monsoon rain is likely to occur after second week of August," an official of Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) told BSS today.

Under the influence of cyclonic storm Komen, the entire country particularly its coastal parts saw heavy monsoon fury that caused incessant rainfall submerging its most low-lying areas, he added.

The low-lying areas of the coastal districts of Cox's Bazar, Chittagong, Noakhali, Laxmipur, Bhola, Barguna, Bagerhat, Khulna, Satkhira and their offshore islands and chars were submerged by storm surge and heavy monsoon rains, which were triggered by the cyclone.

According to a long-range weather forecast of BMD, one or two monsoon depressions are likely to be formed in the Bay of Bangel this month and the Brahmaputra and Meghna basins may experience normal flooding.
