Finance minister AMA Muhith says Students will have to pay VAT

Finance minister, AMA Muhith, on Friday reiterated that there is no possibility of withdrawing value-added tax (VAT) on private education services and students will have to pay the tax, on their own, from next year.

The private university students do not need to pay additional VAT this year as they have taken to the street against the tax, instead, the tax would be paid by the university authorities, the finance minister explained.

The minister came up with the remarks while responding to queries from reporters after an award giving ceremony jointly organised by DHL and The Daily Star at a city hotel.

Earlier on Thursday afternoon, Muhith said that there was no scope for withdrawing the tax.

“I have information that per day expense for a private university student is Tk 1000. I just imposed only 7.5 per cent tax,” he said at a briefing at Sylhet deputy commissioner’s office on the day.
