9 units of Ashuganj power plant shut down

Nine units of Ashuganj Power Station were shut down on Monday evening after as an equipment of age-old substation exploded, officials said.

“The explosion in the station shut down all the power units at around 6:30pm,” Nurul Alam, managing director of Ashuganj Power Station Company told.

“A service breaker fault, I think, might have originated the explosion. The engineers are now working hard to restore the units. I believe, the units will start operating very shortly,” he added.

Ashuganj Power Station is the second largest power supplier in the country, with generation capacity of 671 megawatts, or one tenth of the overall electricity production capacity of the country.

An official of the Power Development Board also said the shutdown of the nine units disrupted power supply in several areas of Chittagong, Comilla, Brahmanbaria and Mymensingh.
